This matching pair of small coffee tables was conceived and designed in Rhinoceros 3D for Mac OS. The software allowed me to explore multiple variations on the theme, even finishing them with a hammer texture.
A selection of designs were sent to the client for comment and subsequent variations were made in response.
When the final design was settled, I was able to determine the material cut lengths of for the pieces directly from Rhino. I was also able to extract the necessary information to build the required bending jigs. The job itself was challenging but would have been near to impossible to imagine or achieve without the 3D software.
The tables are constructed, in the most part, from 12 mm square mild steel bar with 50 x 3 mm flat section for the 'belts'. The steel was cold hammered prior to forging to provide a textured finish. Some slight changes to the original drawing were made in production for aesthetic reasons.
The 3 mm thick brass motif, included on each table, was water cut from an illustrator pdf file.
The tables are finished with a wire brush and rust guard clear top coat.
