Customer Note:

Make a roaring fire - this is an essential tool for your firepit or pizza oven or wood-fired oven.

You'll be able to build a blazing fire and manage the logs as they burn.  These look great, they're really solid, top quality workmanship as well as being handy functional accessories for your firepit, pizza oven, or a very large fireplace.

Andirons are not only decorative, they serve a functional purpose.  They're designed to lift logs up from the hearth floor to increase air circulation underneath for a more robust fire.  They provide a space underneath the firewood for the kindling and firelighters which is used to start a fire. Andirons are free-standing to allow removal for cleaning ashes from the firepit, fireplace or wood-fired oven. From a practical point, they provide better ventilation and burning with consistent heat for cooking if used in a wood-fired oven. By raising the fire, the air can get to the fire from all sides, so that it burns better. Andirons also serve to prevent the wood from rolling out of the fire.  In order to let the fire burn better, fires have been elevated for thousands of years with andirons.

We always try to make practical items look interesting and have character, so our andirons will add either a contemporary or quirky look to your fireplace, with 4 options - simple minimalist style OR adding an animal head to the front:

  1. Minimalist
  2. Bull's head (add $30 each)
  3. Dragon head (add $30 each)
  4. Ram's head (add $30 each)

How to use andirons

Place the andiron in the firepit, fireplace or oven, with the two legs at the front, single leg at the rear. Place your logs propped from both sides of the andiron with one end of the log on the floor, the other atop the spine of the andiron, from either or both sides with a pile of kindling in the centre or below the spine.  Allow gaps between the firewood for the passage of air and flames for more complete combustion and less smoke.  Light the fire and enjoy the radiant and even heat from a hearty blaze.

Due to packaging and the shape of these items, it's a bulky parcel and postage is calculated by size rather than weight.

  • Hand-made from 12mm round mild steel

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How long before the product I like can be shipped?

We keep most of the more popular items we make in stock. If an item is in stock, it may be able to be sent on the day we receive your order, or depending on time of day and any customising, it may be sent on the following day. If you are running short on time, you could call or email us to check what we have available to ship immediately, or ask how long before the item can be made and ready for shipping.

Some of the items that we don't hold in stock are the Jewellery Boxes or Fireside Tools, because these have many options and variables, eg. colour of fabric lining, style of handles and type of tools. Our iron rings also need to be made to size, but as these are quick to make, they may only take an extra day or so.

Caring for Iron & Steel jewellery

Iron is a base metal and is not as stable as gold, silver or stainless steel. When it comes into contact with oxygen in the air or water, it will try to combine with the oxygen to create an iron oxide. We know this as rust. This is the reason why you seldom see iron in its naked state. Iron is protected in various ways: paints, glazes, varnishes, oils and waxes. Your jewellery piece has had a quality clear varnish applied to help protect it.

Your jewellery loves to be worn often. The oils in your skin help to condition the metal much like when you season a cast iron skillet (typically rinse, dry and apply an oil then heat it briefly - no soap as that is corrosive). Your iron jewellery can be treated similarly. Keep it dry and rub a little oil occasionally if it was exposed to water.

If it does get wet with substances like soaps & detergents, chlorine or salt water, rinse it with clean water and dry thoroughly using a hair dryer or leave it in the sun briefly. Apply some oil, you can use coconut oil, olive oil, or any other oil safe for cooking. Rub it on and buff it off.

Some people like to hang and display their jewellery. That would be great...as long as you aren't doing so in a steamy bathroom. Water and humidity are its foes.
